Doesn’t it feel as though Christmas was just last month? It might feel that way, but it has been nearly a year. So it’s time to get festive again! We have put together a few tips about how to celebrate Christmas and increase the numbers of followers on social networks. 10 Tips for Christmas:
1. Christmas decoration
Have you put up Christmas decorations in your office? Why not do the same on Twitter and Facebook? The background image of your header or your profile image is easy to change.
You don’t feel like using your own pictures? Plenty of Christmas pictures are available on the Internet. But you don’t want to spend money on them? Then have a look at the pixabay.com or pexels.com websites, which share domain photos. We took the liberty of adding these links to the keyword “Christmas”.
2. Christmas messages
Add some spice to your newsfeed with Christmas messages. You can call attention to Christmas activities being sponsored by your company, offer holiday discounts or simply share an entertaining Christmas story. This works best if the content it is somehow related to your company. Videos are also popular. However, be careful not to overdo it. Followers don’t want to be flooded with news.
3. Join-in initiatives
Join-in initiatives in social networks help to build strong relationships with your followers and create new ones, in particular when the activities are challenging yet nonetheless easily achievable. You can ask them to put your products in a Christmas setting and to take pictures and upload them. The community will select the best pictures and the winner will obviously be given a prize.
If your company is part of the service industry, ask your users to transform the services into a picture with Christmas spirit. Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself if necessary.
4. Small games maintain friendship
How about a game of Christmas hide and seek? For instance, post a picture of your office decorated for Christmas. But hide on of your products somewhere in the image. The first person to find and correctly name it can win a prize.
Alternatively, you can post two detailed pictures that appear identical at first glance. However, small differences can be recognized at second glance. Who can find and name them all?
Guessing games are also fun here. “How many fir needles does our Christmas tree have?” is certainly a fun guessing question, but how can you figure out the correct answer? “How heavy is our Christmas tree?” is just as much fun but much easier to check.
5. Recipes and ideas or decoration as part of a Christmas calendar
Cooking and baking recipes are very popular, particularly around Christmas. You can find plenty of ideas on the Internet. And don’t forget the beverages. There are plenty of delicious, alternative eggnog recipes available. For instance at https://blog.mollymaid.com/2014/12/24/5-fun-alternatives-egg-nog/.
Decorating tips are also very popular. How about suggestions for designing your own Christmas cards? https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/holidays/christmas-ideas/g4080/clever-diy-christmas-cards/ has many cute Christmas card ideas.
Simply be sure that the recipes and tips you offer are easy to follow and do not demand expensive or unusual materials and skills.
Post one tip or idea every day – as in an Advent calendar. You can obviously combine it with a contest. For instance, “Who made the prettiest Christmas card using the instructions posted on December 5?”
6. Christmas music
Of course there is more to Christmas than food, beverages and decorations – music is also an important ingredient when it comes to creating the spirit of Christmas. You can create a playlist with your favorites on Spotify, iTunes or Deezer. Simply share these lists on social networks and dole out some of your Christmas vibes! Playlists can also generate new followers who simply enjoy your music taste.
Instructions about how to create playlists are available from all the standard music streaming services:
What works with music also works with videos. For instance, set up your own YouTube channel and put together a selection of nice Christmas clips. These can include movie recommendations as well as short commercials or the like, which have a fun, moving or entertaining association with Christmas.
Of course it is always best when the videos are in some way associated with your product or services. You can include this reference in your description of the clips, for instance, “Our favorite Christmas movie. Take a look at the tablecloth at 2:45 minutes – just like the one in our collection ;-)”
8. Wish list
Contests and join-in activities are great, but they can also fulfill your followers’ wishes. Let your followers send you their most creative and interesting wish lists, and meet their wishes.
This will give you plenty of material for further posts on Facebook and co. – satisfying wishes is great to report on.
Alternatively, you can fulfill the wish of a charitable organization and present it on social networks. This improves your image while you are helping others.
9. Use the right platform
It is important to use the right platform when selecting Christmas activities. This obviously depends on your target group.
Users of social networks in the United States (effective 2017):
Facebook is where you will reach the most people from all age groups. It has 241 million registered users of whom 185 million are daily active users. 13 percent of all users are between 25 and 34 years old, 9 percent are between 18 and 24 years old and 9.5 percent are between 35 and 44 years old. The distribution of active users among those 45 to 54 year olds is 8 percent, and 3.5 percent for the 55 to 65 year olds. Surprisingly, the user group over 65 years of age accounts for 5 percent of active users. In general, there are 1 to 2 percent more women than men in nearly all age groups.
Snapchat currently has 70.4 million users, of whom 41 percent are between 25 and 34 years old. This service is even more popular when it comes to the group of 18 to 24 year olds. They account for 45 percent.

Content suitable for the following media
Facebook and Twitter …
… belong to the so-called social networking platforms. This is where you want to be if you intend to bring together or invite your followers to take part in interactive activities. This can be achieved with contests, join-in initiatives or similar activities.
… is a bookmarking network. This is where you can collect external content that can help other users or arouse their interest in specific topics. Decorating ideas and recipes are therefore perfectly suited to Pinterest.
The great thing about this network is that the users continue to receive suggestions that match their interests. This means that you can find followers simply by posting interesting articles.
It goes without saying that your Pinterest posts also belong on Facebook and co., thus killing two birds with one stone!
…is a sharing network. It usually involves distributing pictures and videos. The heaviest Instagram users are young adults and teens. You can easily reach the 14-29 year-olds with appealing pictures and unusual videos. Visual storytelling on Instagram is the name of the game for any Christmas or marketing activity.
YouTube and Flickr are also sharing networks.
… is a messenger service which permits pictures and other media to be viewed for only a specific amount of time before disappearing. The story function makes access to content available for 24 hours and can be used to host contests or give glimpses from “behind the scenes”. This makes it a very fast-paced and interactive social network. It is relevant for anyone whose target group includes young adults around the age of 25.
10. Be authentic
Our last tip is not only relevant for Christmas: be authentic in social networks and offer more than advertising!
Social media users are continuously being showered with ads that promise them the moon. They don’t want to receive even more ads in a normal newsfeed.
Make sure that your company, your products and your services come across as authentic. Attract attention by hosting special contests and join-in initiatives or witty news. Let your “actions” speak for themselves. In doing so, you will build a loyal community of followers – lasting beyond Christmas and for years to come.
